Mediacom offers low monthly promo prices, but check for data caps and price hikes
Mediacom was founded in 1995 and is owned by billionaire Rocco Commisso. (Fun fact: Commisso also currently owns the New York Cosmos soccer team [1]!) Mediacom ranks as the ninth-largest internet provider in the nation [2]. Mediacom offers service in over 20 states and is the largest cable provider in Iowa and the second-largest in Illinois. As aĀ cable internet provider, Mediacom will give you reliable internet at gigabit speed, often at super-low promotional discounts.Their internet service is called Xtream. Unfortunately, Mediacom will often hike your monthly rates sharply when your initial promotions run out. Even more importantly, their lower-end plans will give you monthly data caps, which will cause overage charges or throttling if you run over your limit. Mediacomās data caps for its first-tier Xtream plan are much lower than data limits for most cable internet. Thatās a big deal, as it can affect your price or internet performance.Pros

Attractive promotional pricing marred by low data caps on some plans, price hikes on all plans
Mediacom is one of only a few cable companies in the U.S. that offers a promo price of $19.99/month for a year. While that price seems outstanding, there are some drawbacks. That first tier plan, known as Internet 250, has a downstream data cap of 400 GB per month. This is low compared to other cable internet data caps, which are more typically capped at 1 TB (1000 GB). Some cable companies donāt have caps at all, which makes Mediacom look worse in comparison. The data cap may affect your total price, because if you go over your monthly limit, you will pay $10 for every 50GB over your allowance. In addition, there is a major additional fee hiding behind every Mediacom plan: the extra modem fee of $14/month. So donāt forget that a company that offers you $19.99/month plus a $14 modem fee is no better deal than another company with a $34.00/month rate that includes all your equipment at no extra charge. The prices for Mediacom plans also experience sharp increases after the first year. For example, that first-tier plan jumps from $19.99 to $49.99. And on top of that, you still have to pay the modem fee, which would take you to about $65. Suddenly, your Internet 250 is no bargain! And the other plans experience similar price hikes that basically double your monthly payment after the first year. There is one bright spot in Mediacomās pricing. The company does have a plan for low-income customers to try toĀ ease the burdenĀ of a high monthly internet price. Called Xtream Connect, the discounted plan is only for those who qualify by receiving certain other federal benefits. For example, if you are in SNAP or Medicaid or SSI, you would qualify for this plan. Mediacom has many of the online customer support features of the top national providers. You can pay your bill online. You can chat with support from 9 am to 9 pm every day. Or you can call by phone. But despite the support, customers arenāt delighted, according to the 2023 JD Power Residential Internet Service Provider Satisfaction Study. Mediacom ranked at the bottom of the survey in the North Central area of the United States, which is the only region in which it was rated [7]. I lived here before Mediacom installed the cable. I believe they had to replace the cable from the street connection to the house 3-4 times sense it was installed. They cut through my roof drain pipes the last time and never repaired them. Recently my service started dropping out in Oct/Nov 2025 intermittently with a rotating red circle on my TV screen and stalled the operation of what we were watching. On the first of these interruptions a Mediacom technician came and replaced my modem/WiFi telling me mine was obsolete. He took the one that he said was obsolete but that was mine and I had bought it from them about 2.5 years earlier and it was my property. The supposed better Modem/WiFi required two speed upgrades to work and my intermittent problems were not resolved. I continued to have drop out problems so I loaded a speedtest.net app in my phone and it was evident that there was a reception problem in our bedroom. I had installed a dual headset in our bedroom recently. I unplugged this headset and normal operation resumed. Now my bill had gone from 90 a month to 115 a month and after a year I was going to have to pay a rental fee on a modem/WiFi I never needed along with the increased present monthly increased billings. I only can estimate my billings as they have lost sink with the calendar and it also looks like I'm being charged for things I'm not aware of. In mid Dec 2025 I lost the signal in our first floor sun room and we had a rotating red circle and stalled TV service. I called and reported it, got technical phone support where they could reset the modem from their office and do other testing and determined there was no problem. Unfortunately nothing they did fixed anything and they said they'd have to have a technician come out the next day to see what's wrong. I also said that in my experience with this sort pf problem I was always told to unplug the power from the modem, wait a few minutes and restart the modem. I said I would do that next and after I did, it terminated my intermittent problem, and their useless phone troubleshooting. The technician came to visit the next morning and everything was working but my speed tests were poor based on the idea that I have a 1G service. My download speeds were at 100mbps and the upload speeds were about 1/2 of that. The technician called me from the street and I suggested he test the signal strength there. About 5 minutes later he was in the lower level of my home where the modem/WIFI is and my test speed were now at 500-700mbps. I asked him why and he did not know. I suggested that he probably cleared a bad connection at the street and he didn't think so. The modem/WiFi that was removed from my property in early October of 2025 had operated flawlessly for about 2.5 years and I did not have this new intermittent operation. I want "MY MODEM/WIFI" back. I want to get back to my $90 dollar a month bill. It is becoming very obvious to me that they have replaced a good device with a bad device and don't want to fix anything. If anyone fixed something here it was me with no Mediacom help. They tell me they can sell me all these different products to improve my service with their lousy rental unit. I feel like I'm walking around here with a screw in my stomach. I want to be reimbursed for all the price gouging resulted from this entire circus.

I would give them a 3 with 10 being the highest possible. Their Tech they sent out was rude and very unprofessional....making it a point to sigh and moan load enough for me to hear him cause he was clearly getting aggravated cause he wanted to leave. NOW mind you this man was a couple hrs late showing up...even when he called and said he was ten min away it was still over half hr to 45 min before me made his presence.
